The Head of Learning Leadership of Red House International School, Denise Lam, was one of the experts invited to Education Brazil Summit 2021 – one of the most relevant events in the sector – which took place from September 15th to 17th and was organized by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. This year, major thought leaders in the area analyzed the learnings, challenges and the transformations from the long period of closed schools and remote education due to the pandemic.
Special reporter and Estadão Education columnist Renata Cafardo mediated the panel Denise Lam participated in: “New teaching, new evaluations”. And, together with Prof. Emeritus of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) Chico Soares, and the President of the National Association of Hybrid Basic Education (Anebhi) Maria Inês Fini, issues relevant to the present times were discussed, among them what has changed in student evaluations such as the national tests ENEM and Saeb, student retention, and the high school reform.
Denise talked about the benefits of continuous and evidence-based assessment so that learning evolves, a method used at Red House. “Exams are just one way to collect evidence of learning. We also work with photo collection, videos, student speech recording, application projects. This continuous collection is as important as the more formal methods for evidence purposes. And one does not exclude the other.”
Denise also highlighted the importance of the evaluation process to gather information that should guide teachers in the planning of classes. “Learning and the various ways of accessing knowledge generate information back to educators, not only for students. With the result of the activities, we inform the entire school community, especially the teachers, that with this data in hand can redesign learning roadmaps”.
During the conversation, The Head of Learning Leadership also addressed topics such as the school-family-student partnership and highlighted the role of each in a professionalized, dynamic and constructive pedagogical proposal.
